The program generates the feeder parameters and loads them to the FlexIS control to realize the desired multiple gob weight production. Crystal grains at the perimeter of the stone had irregular shapes and moderate birefringence. Based on these properties it was concluded that these grains were corundum. SEM analysis revealed the stone had seeds at the interior as well as the exterior. In addition there were small grains at the interior, as shown in Figure 10(c). EDX analysis revealed the small grains at the interior were composed of silica (10(d)). The remaining area of the interior of the stone was composed primarily of silica with a lesser amount of alumina (10(e)).

Petrographic analysis revealed the presence of grains and laths, as shown in Figure 3b. Based on the physical characteristics, the extinction angle, and the sign of elongation the laths were identified as tridymite. The grains showed a moderate level of birefringence, which in addition to being associated with tridymite, indicated they were likely quartz. SEM EDX revealed the stone consisted of grains and extending laths (3(c)) both composed of silica (3(d)). The SEM/EDX provided the same information as the petrographic techniques plus it provided the elemental composition of the grains and laths.
